Prepare the right conversation
Use the records you already have: equipment model, approximate installation date, service history and the pattern of the problem. ENERGY STAR recommends discussing uncomfortable rooms and expecting a home evaluation when hiring for heating and cooling work. The planner organizes that conversation without recommending system size or diagnosing equipment.
Ask for the evaluation behind the recommendation
For replacement, ask how the contractor will assess the home, equipment sizing and relevant ducts or airflow. A bigger unit is not automatically the appropriate choice. Describe changes to the home and ask the provider to explain which observations support the proposal.
Compare the installed system
Request the exact equipment models and a written list of included work. Clarify controls, electrical or gas connections, condensate handling, duct changes, permits, removal and startup checks where applicable. Distinguish the base installation from optional improvements so two proposals can be compared meaningfully.
Keep service and warranty responsibilities clear
Ask about diagnostic charges, approval before extra work, manufacturer registration, maintenance requirements and the separate labor and equipment warranty terms. Record who provides follow-up service. This planner does not calculate energy savings, rebate eligibility or a fair market price.
Questions before you authorize work
- What did the evaluation show about my comfort concern?
- How was the proposed system size determined?
- Which installation or duct work is excluded?
- Who handles registration, maintenance and warranty service?
